Essence Examines African-AmericaN Beauty Consumers

Essence bulletinEssence beauty and cover director Mikki Taylor moderated a panel discussion about the attitudes and purchase behaviors of African-American consumers in the prestige beauty sector at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City on May 13.

Panelists included celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine, dermatologist Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton and retail trending specialist Candace Corlett.
Research conducted alongside the New York-based firm Vision Critical Group found that African-American women spend 80% more on cosmetics annually—and nearly twice as much on skincare products—than general market women do. Also, aspirational brands were discovered to be more appealing than celebrity endorsements.

Additionally, in terms of self-confidence, the African-American woman describes herself as intelligent, independent, attractive, ambitious, sexy and fabulous significantly more often than general market women.
